First is a Trial flight to see if it's really you. To take it further you will need to join Hauraki Aero Club for insurance purposes.

Buy a log book to record your flying and talk to the Instructor about appropriate clothing and footwear then book your first lesson.

Lessons will have a component of theory so you understand what to expect in your lesson, how to accomplish the task and why you need to learn this action.( about 20-30 minutes by the time you have a discussion time). Around 40 minutes of flying time with about 10 minutes allowed for cockpit checks, pre-flight checks and taxi time to runway in use. A 5 minute debrief in the cockpit or in the training room to go over how the flight went and what to expect in your next lesson. As the Aero club is a non profit incorporated society with limited funds and recourses your payment for the flight would be most appreciated at this time. Lessons at the moment are around $200 which includes instructor time.

A minimum of 50 hrs dual and solo flying is req'd to complete the Civil Aviation requirements. You will need to complete examinations in: aviation law, air navigation and flight planning, flight radio operators rating, aircraft technical knowledge (principles of flight), meteorology, human factors and complete a practical flight test at the end to qualify.

Most people fly as they can afford but the more often the better your achievement rate will be. Twice a week is brilliant, once a week is the average and great, once a fortnight is good, once a month not good. The club teaches in a Cessna 172 aircraft which is probably the most popular in the world for training. Other aircraft are available if you wish not to use the Cessna.
